Most treatment for acne that you will find will only ain at controlling the symptons. These ointments that your general practitioner or dermatologist prescribe you will do the following:

-prevent new acne from forming
-improving the ones that are already on your skin
-prevent scarring

These creams and lotions usually costs hundreds of dollars and mind you, the treament usually last for months, usually up to 6 months till you are assessed again. If the treatment was not beneficial you will have to start a new acne treatment with new medication.

Here are a few methods put together by long time acne sufferers, with those you will usually see improvement within a few days/week of trying them. I have listed them in no particular order. If you are like me and has tried to treat your acne with all types of ointment with no results. I would suggest you to try any of these. I have personally used the method in Acne Free in 3 Days, I have also read the other books which are equally informational but I found my cure in Acne Free in 3 Days.

The real cause of acne can be different to each person but is basically caused by an everactivity of the sebaceous glands that secrete oil to the skin. The oil produced by the skin is called sebum and sebum is needed to keep the skin smooth and supple. Sebum goes to the surface of the skin through the same pores that hair grows as shown in the image below.

Acne can happen at any time in life though mostly associated to teenagers, some people can start having acne problems during their twenties or even older. Hormones also play a big role in acne, a high level of testosterone in the body can make acne worse, that's why teenagers often have acne more than any other age range.

Acne is caused when sebaceous glands produce excess sebum while at the same time dead skin cells at the pore opening aren't and and thus clog the follicle (see image above). At this stage it is a mild acne and can be cured with most over the counter medication.

For some people, it goes further where the sebum build up creates an ideal environment for a bacterium called Propionibacterium acnes, this bacteria is usually lives on the skin, but with the right conditions they start to grow. This is why people with oily skin are more prone to acne. On a last note about the causes, acne is not infectious. So, there's no way you can catch it from your friends.

For a more detailed explanation, here are all the main causes of Acne:

- Extra sebum. As explained earlier, sebum is normal and is needed for the skin to stay smooth but extra sebum can cause clogging and thus making a perfet environment for acne

-Hormones. This is the main reason why teenagers suffers most from acne, as during puberty the body begins to produce the hormone called androgens, the hormones that enlarges sebaceous glands which is a natural part of body development. This period of life can cause a hormonal imbalance where sebaceous glands can be overstimulated, this is also the reason why some women have acne during the menstrual cycle or sometimes during pregnancy.

-Bacteria. The bacterium Propionibacterium acnes is originally present on our skin, but with a good environement the bacterium will start to multiply very rapidly and thus creating a chemical reaction around the follicle which makes the skin red.

-Inflammation. The bacterium Propionibacterium acnes is mainly responble for skin inflammation, but can also be caused by any other unwanted bacteria which causes the skin to turn red while our body is trying to get rid of the bacteria.

One good news for acne sufferers is acne can be treated and there are many available treatments out there, it is just a matter of knowing which one is the best for your condition.

Acne is the term to define clogged pores on various part of the body, technically called whiteheads and blackheads. Acne is also the most widely used to define pimples, cysts and nodules. Acne occurs on the face, neck, back and sometimes other places of the body and mostly affects teenagers. Though mostly associated to teenagers, there are adults who continue to have acne during their early twenties, some even in their 30s and 40s. Even if acne is not life threatening, it can really affect the sufferer emotionally and also causes permanent scarring in case of severe acne.

Types of acne

You may have very often come across very confusing words or phrases when searching about acne. Papules, pustules, cysts or nodules are understandable only if you know the word's definition. Also photos say a thousand words as they say, th
ere's no need for word description.

Papule

A papule is a small solid lesio
n of about 5mm or less of slightly elevated skin. A group of papules together on the skin will give the feeling of sandpaper to touch. Papules can either be the same color of your skin, red, brown, purple or pink.

Best is to get papules treated with your dermatologist, as papules can open when scratched or runned and become infected and sometimes crusty.

Pustule

The name of it alone can sound gross to some people. A pustule is a small elevation of the skin, and unlike a papule, the pustule contains a mistuew of white blood cells, dead skin cells and as well as bacteria. Pustules usually form in hair pores, thus you will find a hair at the center. When healed pustules will not leave any scars if they were not popped or broken in any other way. Best is to keep your hands away from the face.

Nodule

A nodule is very similar to a papule, solid and dome shaped lesion of the skin but unlike a papule, a nodule is caused by an inflamation that also extends to deeper layers of the skin and may cause tissue distruction resulting in scarring.

Cyst

Cystic acne are nodules of inflamation. It is less common than any other type of acne but like all of them it is caused by an excess of sebum in the pores. To the contrary of popular beliefs, cystic acne is not caused by hygiene and is not affected by it in any way. Cysts are often filled with pus like substance and are a few millimeters to 1 cenimeter in diameter and are usually very painful.
